Any business coach, strategy, or leadership coach will tell you that you must have core values before you even start thinking about starting or running your business. For many, this is a task that is overlooked, so what do we do? We take a piece of paper and write: Honesty, Integrity, Teamwork, and Customer Focus. We are happy—mission accomplished, and now we can move on to run our business.


But what do we really do with those core values, why do we need them, and do they really matter? How do we choose them, and how do we run our business in alignment with those values?

Core values are born deep inside you, as the business leader, and what you believe in. Those values are not related to what the company does, what products or services it provides, or who the customers are. They shape the company's culture, how its employees perceive it, and how customers and anyone interacting with your business feel about your company.

How to define your core values

Your values are already there.

Whether you know them or not, your core values are well established within you. So, how do you find your core values? Reflect on yourself and your behavior. What situations made you happy and energized, motivated and eager to help? What companies did you enjoy doing business with (even as a consumer)? Why? Then, think about those moments that got you upset, uncomfortable, and shy away.


Not only will this reflection reveal your values, but it will also provide a deep understanding of why those values are so crucial to your company. Working with people who share your values will provide the same joy and belonging you had.


Narrow your list

Write down all those values that are important to you. This might be a long list of values, but not all are 'core' values. Those core values are the ones that, without them, you would not feel comfortable. Those are the must-haves and the ones you would demonstrate the most. Rank the list and try to narrow it down to three to five values that, if implemented - your company would be the place you always wanted.


Embed your values

Once you have a list of those core values, try to envision what it would be like to walk to a place that demonstrates those values. What would change, and how?

Try to think about the decision-making process and the way your employee handbook is crafted (if you don't have one, think of the guidelines you deploy).

Think about the way you interact with your customers and the message you deliver in your ads. In particular, think about the process you use to hire, evaluate, and fire employees. Are those processes driven by your values?

It all has to come together to form one coherent message.


Write a list of all the processes you have, and decide how those could be changed to reflect your values.
